JEREMIAH KAU MAKOKOANE

For the past two years, Jerry has been the Chief Operations Officer of the Legal Aid Board South Africa. He has overall responsibility for the business operations of the Legal Aid Board, ensuring the development and implementation of programmes to deliver legal aid service, to meet client and stakeholder needs, and to ensure efficient and effective management of Legal Aid Board resources, which includes human capital, finance, assets, systems, procedures and compliance to policies.
Prior to joining the Legal Aid Board, Jerry worked for the South African Ministry of Transport as Chief Operations Officer responsible for co-ordinating and managing organisational development of the Department, and providing business processes supportive to the effective operation of the Department. His academic background is particularly focussed in the economic and information systems fields.
Jerry was a key person in leading the establishments of national public entities in the transport sector, amongst others, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), as well as the Rail Safety Regulator. He led the development of a National Travel Survey, the National Freight Logistics strategy, as well as the National Ports Policy.
Post the first South African democratic elections of 1994, Jerry formed part of the leadership which steered the establishment of the Limpopo Provincial administration, focusing more on consolidating the Provincial Budget and streamlining the Information System during the transitional period.
Jerry has made several representations to the South African parliamentary committees especially on Transportation matters. He has made a number of presentations on transport policies, transport planning, and public transport to key South African stakeholders and authorities, and has to a lesser extent to international transport forums such as symposia and conferences.
While serving the South African government in varying senior positions, and being involved in the research and implementation of key programmes of the State, Jerry led and was part of delegations to Canada, United Kingdom (UK), State of Israel, United States of America (USA), African countries (Rwanda, Chad and Lesotho), Republic of China, and Japan.
Jerry is married and has one daughter and two sons.
